The Wedding Story

Thursday, August 20, 2015

The wedding industry is booming with organisers and decorators as customers become more aware of trends, styles and designs. However, The Wedding Designers promise to have an edge over the rest. Yamini Walia speaks to owners Yamini Shah & Rishi Rochlani to find out more

If you think of the film Band Baaja Baraat every time someone mentions wedding planners, we don’t blame you! While the concept may have been oversimplified in the film, wedding planners do make it easy for couples to plan their special day. The Wedding Designers, the brainchild of Yamini Shah & Rishi Rochlani aims to make your big day spectacular with their creativity, attention to detail and impeccable hospitality management. Read on to find out more about them.

How did you come up with the concept for The Wedding Designers?
We loved the idea of making someone’s wedding the most memorable experience for them. The idea was to bring in as much detail and trend in the wedding industry as there is in fashion. As a designer ideates and creates clothing, we aim to customise weddings.

If you were to describe your concept in a single line, what would you say?
Fantasise. Design. Experience. We swear by those keywords.

What’s your idea of the perfect wedding?
The perfect wedding for us would be at a stunning location with amazing décor, a varied selection of entertainers and performers, delectable cuisine and a concise guest list. When you don’t have to worry and can sit back to experience new and exciting things of your wedding day, you begin to realise that like every love story, every wedding can be different too!

What are some of your most memorable experiences of the weddings you've planned in the past?
There are several experiences and each one is as memorable as the next! The parents of one particular bride asked us to plan a traditional sangeet ceremony as they wanted to dance on the stage for her. But, the couple wanted nothing to do with a traditional sangeet. Instead, they wanted performers like the ones in Cirque du Soleil. It was difficult to ensure that they both got what they wanted and so, we came up with a Burlesque theme for their sangeet/cocktail where the parents performed and so did the professional dancers.

What would you say is the USP of your brand?
Style, elegance, attention to detail and a personal touch are our USPs. We ensure that we are present at every wedding we take on and make it a point not to get involved in more weddings than we can cater to personally.

What do you think is the current state of the Indian wedding industry? Would you like to see any changes in how things are done?
With the rise of several fashion-conscious brides and grooms, the Indian wedding industry is evolving at a steady pace. The concept of run-off-the-mill weddings is changing and we are part of that change. We believe that every person in this industry should try to innovate and customise with every wedding, challenging their peers intellectually and creatively.

Which location do you love the most? And which one do you like the least?
We love designing weddings in Goa and Rajasthan — Goa for its beaches and Rajasthan for its stunning palaces. Most couples prefer these venues as they are most accessible. The least preferred would be places with no connectivity (commute or network-wise) as it becomes difficult for guests to travel to these remote locations for just two days.

What are your future plans?
We plan to keep innovating and do what we do for people in love.

After consistent setbacks you will begin to feel that things are moving in the right direction after all. You may have the dissatisfied feeling that your loved ones are not doing enough to help you but at the moment it is best to let things be as they are.
