A number of hairstyles rely on hair teasing for volume. But, with several hair experts asking you not to rely on it as the only method to add a little volume, is there any way to avoid the hair damage it causes? We bring you a few tips.

What is teasing?
Hair teasing, commonly known as backcombing, is a popular trick to help add volume to your hair. It’s exactly like combing your hair, only backwards. We’ll explain— starting with a small section of your hair, comb it through with a fine-tail comb, making sure that there are no knots in your hair. Now, with the section held up, comb towards your roots from the tips of your hair. Begin with around three inches from your roots, and backcomb till you are two inches from your roots. Settle the hair with a hairspray. It’s messy, but after lightly running your comb through it, it will settle down.

Improving the condition of your hair
While it may seem like an unnecessary thing to mention, your diet affects how healthy your hair is. Age, stress, diet, lifestyle habits and the hair products you use — all these affect your hair in one way or another. One of the oldest practices for healthier hair is oiling it. Oiling your hair conditions it thoroughly, leaving it looking and feeling softer. It is advisable to oil your hair overnight — this ensures that you don’t have to deal with oily hair during the day when it can attract dust.

Apart from this, following a healthier diet is a must. Needless to say, leafy green vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, kale and salad greens and lentils are a rich source of iron. Since your hair needs proteins, ensuring that you get a good amount of this nutrient is crucial. Chicken, turkey, fish, dairy, products and eggs are other great source of protein.

Vitamin C aids the absorption of iron into your bloodstream. The best sources are blackcurrants, blueberries, broccoli and guava, kiwi fruits, oranges, papaya, strawberries and sweet potatoes. Vitamin C also helps to produce collagen, which strengthens the capillaries that supply nutrition to your hair shafts.

Tease your hair only at the crown and the top of your head, and then smoothen out the hair on the top by running a brush lightly over the visible sections. Use hairspray to make your hair look fresh and voluminous.

Ponytail with a teased crown
This is a vintage look that continues to evolve through time. Make sure that your crown is not so teased that your hair looks stiff. To increase the volume, you can apply a generous amount of dry shampoo throughout your hair.

Teased bun
This elegant hairstyle works perfectly well with ethnic wear. Tease the top section (closer to your crown) and spray with hairspray. Tease this more  to create a beehive effect. Make sure that you pin the top section down into a pouf at the top of your head.

This is the most common hairstyle when it comes to hair teasing. To create a retro beehive look, you will need to create as much volume as possible in your crown. Start with mousse, preferably on dry hair. Apply it from roots to end and dry it using a hair dryer.
