A new pair of shoes can do a world of good to your outfit and can make your day, says Sunny Rodricks as he brings you the latest shoe trends of the season and a few tips on how to pick the perfect pair
Be it an office meeting or a New Years Eve party, sporting the right pair of shoes is always a priority. From combat boots to sneakers and from lace-ups to slouch boots and high ankle heel boots, there is so much on offer that you’re spoilt for choice. If you’ve been playing it safe with your shoe choices all along, it’s time to shed your inhibitions and walk the trendy trail. But, if you don’t know where to begin, designer Ohaila Khan advises, “Mules, sneakers and boots are the biggest trend for fall 2017. The biggest upcoming trend in footwear is wearing socks under sandals and stilettos! It’s always a good idea to pick expensive, high quality shoes in classic styles and inexpensive, cost efficient, high street versions for styles you feel might be too trend driven and might look outdated post a season.” So, to make life easier for you we tell you how to pick and match the right pair of shoes.
SNEAK IT UP
Sneakers are not only flexible and comfortable but can also be stylish when paired right. You can pair them with T-shirts, casual dresses, shorts or even wear them to college and work. This shoe style is your best bet when it comes to looking simple, minimalistic and trendy.
- Tip: Pair it with a casual dress for a rocking look
OVER THE KNEE
Over the knee boots are your best companion when it comes to styling the ultimate urbane chic look. Besides being trendy and comfortable, they also provide an accessorised lace up look that can be worn facing the front or the back. “If you want to go for a party look then just throw on a pair of over the knee boots with a mini dress for that uber chic look,” says Vijay Pal Singh Johal, director of Truffle Collection.
- Tip: Pair over the knee boots with your skirts and dresses and be ready to rock the party season this winter
ANKLE IT UP
Ankle boots work well for any occasion whether it is a business meeting, an interview or a romantic date. They keep you warm and complement formal attire as well. You can pair them with skinny jeans and a leather jacket for a trendy appeal.
- Tip: Pair your ankle boots with a cardigan or casual dress for a chic look this season
BLOCK IT WITH BLOCK HEELS
A stylish shoe that you can actually rock at the workspace, the block heels trend existed in the ’70s and ’90s but has now made a major comeback in a more fashionable and modern style. “Even if you’re an outfit type of girl, the subtle details in block heels will add an attractive charm to your outfit,” says the Cover Story London design team.
- Tip: Pair block heels with dresses and cute skirts for your next date
SOCKS AND SANDALS
Wearing socks under sandals is the latest trend that has taken the shoe world by storm. The socks and sandals combination comes in all glitter, letting you shine bright this season. You can pair them with your beach wear or while going on a date. We loved the look Kendall Jenner sported with sheer socks and metallic heels on the Cannes red carpet in early 2017.

“Winter boots come in different shapes, colours and sizes. There are metallic leather boots, ankle boots, brown suede boots and high heel boots to name a few,” says Harkirat Singh, MD, Woodland. He suggests a few tips to keep in mind while buying footwear.
- Comfort: Be careful about how winter boots are supposed to fit; it should support your ankles and give your toes enough space so they don’t feel pinched.
- Grip: Rubber soles are ideal for grip during the monsoon months; keep a check on what kind of grip the sole offers.
- Heat: Heat is most quickly lost from our head and feet so it makes sense to buy a pair of winter boots which are designed to keep the chill as far as possible.
