Expert Speak
Interior Designer Minnie Bhatt of Minnie Bhatt Designs shares a few tips on how to design your house with an oriental theme.
- You should use lacquer, which is an age-old technique from oriental countries that can be used on any piece of furniture, from a chair/ table to a console, to lend a little oriental charm to the space.
- Use vintage, oriental-themed brass open hinges and handles for cabinets or drawer chests. These can be fixed on a simple chest of drawers or on a stand-alone cabinet to give it a contemporary feel.
- Bamboo is a plant that we associate with the orient, so you should incorporate it in your home décor. It’s been depicted in art and paintings from this region for centuries.
- Oriental-style lanterns can be placed on a coffee table or on the floor with a tea light inside to add warmth to the space.
- An oriental-style tea set or a decorative kettle can be used to serve tea or placed on a shelf.
- Small Chinese chests can be used to house serviettes or simply as an accent piece.
