World’s first glasses-free 3D TV unveiled

Thursday, January 05, 2012

While Philips launches more interesting electronic products along with Samsung, LG presents the world’s first refrigerator with a door-in-door system, along with Toshiba’s glasses-free 3D TV for the first time in the world. Chandragupta Amritkar provides an update on these electronic wonders

55ZL2 - Glasses-Free 3D TV
Toshiba unveiled world’s first large-screen glasses-free 3D TV. The 55ZL2 has a screen of 139 cm (55”) in diagonal and does not require glasses to experience 3D. Plus, the 55ZL2 is the world’s first TV targeted at consumers that comes with a Quad Full HD screen. This enables the 55ZL2 to offer a 3D TV experience that can be enjoyed by a large group of viewers and displays 2D contents in four times (Quad) Full HD resolution. The 55ZL2’s glasses-free 3D application is powered by Toshiba’s high-performance multi-processor platform CEVO-ENGINE which also allows for many more innovative applications including PERSONAL-TV, enabling the consumer to personalise TV settings, and SMART-TV applications such as USB recording and access to Toshiba Places.

The glasses-free 3D technology is based on the stereoscopic principle of simultaneously delivering a picture for the left eye and another one with a small offset (parallax) for the right eye – these are then superposed in the viewer’s brain to get the 3D effect. To achieve 3D without glasses, it is essential that the lenses guide the dedicated images to the viewer’s eyes. The Integral Imaging technology, powered by the CEVO-ENGINE, applied to the 55ZL2 delivers nine views which create multiple wide-angle viewing zones in front of the glasses-free 3D TV. This allows several viewers to enjoy the 3D experience at the same time without wearing glasses.

The 55ZL2 delivers much more than glasses-free 3DTV. It also features advanced SMART-TV functions providing access to Toshiba Places, Toshiba’s online platform offering streaming, purchasing and sharing Web-based content.

World’s first smart eco door refrigerators
The addition of the Smart Eco Door makes LG’s 614-litre the first refrigerator in the world to implement a door-in-door system, which further cuts down on energy use. It boasts an impressive A++ energy rating1, due largely to its energy-thrifty Linear Compressor. The Linear Compressor, one of LG’s four Core Technologies, uses a direct transmission system that marks a big advance on transmission systems found in conventional compressors. The linear positioning of the transmission reduces noise levels and increases the durability of the compressor, while the linear configuration requires far lower levels of energy to operate. By letting consumers store their most commonly used items in an ultra-convenient mini-door, the Smart Eco Door precludes the need to open the main door, bringing yet more savings in energy. The door thus brings better efficiency in energy usage and enhanced convenience for consumers.

LG’s Home Bar remains a standard feature, with the refrigerator door offering consumers room for a full bar that can be accessed through a flip-open lid. The ingenious Slim Door Mounted Ice Maker and Water Dispenser add a little more convenience and functionality to the kitchen, freeing up valuable shelf space inside the fridge and allowing easier access to filtered water and ice.

Philips PicoPix
After the success of the first range launched in November 2010, new Philips pico were previewed at the IFA. Real miniature projectors, new PicoPix models are more efficient by providing many enhancements in brightness and contrast for an improved image quality. The two prototypes presented will have 40 and 80 lumens, an image of 120” (305cm) and a contrast of 1000:1. Moreover, they will include intuitive and easy menu navigation as well as more opportunities for connection.

GALAXY S II LTE
The Galaxy S II LTE smartphone from Samsung will feature a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The 4.5-inch Super AMOLED display will offer 3D graphics, though its size also means the device will be far from compact. Additional features include Wi-Fi, e-mail, and messaging, an 8-megapixel camera, a personal organizer, a digital music player, Bluetooth, and the usual access to Google apps. And as its name suggests, the handset will support 4G LTE networks. Additionally, the GALAXY S II LTE can also be connected to up to eight devices via WiFi, meaning that files can be quickly and seamlessly synchronized with laptops, tablets and other Smartphones.
