Alarmed by a spike in incidence of fire with over 1,200 occurrences within just six months, according to Fire department officials, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) standing committee has asked the fire brigade department to conduct regular checks on fire safety norms in malls, multiplexes and high rises.
The members of standing committee decided that after the fire department finishes conducting the inspection, it will take strict action against those found violating the norms under the new Fire Safety Act. It will not just take action; the fire department will also prosecute the offender to set an example for others.
Standing committee chairman has also written to the municipal commissioner to form a committee comprising three members – a fire brigade officer, a law officer and an official from the development plan department.
The fire department is expected to submit their inspection report to the committee.
