You’ve picked out clothes and shoes for the upcoming winter months, but what about adding a little pizzazz to your home as well? Pearl Mathias brings you the wall trends she loves this season
Although the sun is shining down on us at the moment, you can’t ignore the slight breeze that sneaks in every evening. Yes, winter is just around the corner. Turning away from bold floral prints and bright contrasting colours of the summer, we now move on to more mellow and earthier tones. So, along with the warm outfits you’re filling your wardrobe with, it may be time to create a homely feel in your décor as well. And, since we prefer snuggling indoors as the cold sets in, let’s look at a couple of wall designs that are trending this season.
The paisley effect
Since the autumn/winter season is often a gloomy one, the use of colour can add a lot to your décor. “Colour is a powerful tool that can be used to inspire emotions, create the illusion of space or simply set the mood and atmosphere in any setting,” says Kunal Mehta, co-founder of interior décor brand Kanchi. He suggests using paisley wallpaper with light linen curtains to lend your space a classy vibe.
Metal head
Metal clad walls are a rage this winter, according to principal architect at P S Design, Priyanka Pradeep. She says, “Oxidised metals, matte glazes, various patinas of warm metal such as copper, brass and steel add an interesting feel to your walls.” She tells us that wood continues to be a hot favourite since it doesn’t simply provide warmth, which is needed, but also lends your walls a good texture. “However, the trend veers towards a more eclectic vibe, eschewing the polished look. Grasscloth is a great material, which is slowly weaving its way into most homes, given its lovely texture,” she adds.
Wood works
Wall trends will see a change this autumn and winter as new colours and styles are likely to hit the market. Interior designer Neetu Arora is of the opinion that shades of deep blue are brave enough to make your feature wall stand out. Similarly, opt for subtle shades of grey, pink, crème, yellow and green. “The unique character of this season’s wall trends would be subtleness and vintage looks. The more vintage you can make them look, the better it will be,” she says. You could also consider decorating your walls in a dark teak shade as it is incredibly versatile. Use darker colours for your bedroom and slightly brighter and livelier ones for your living room.
Pretty & playful
Add a little brightness to the winter months while keeping your cosy ambiance intact by playing with primary colours. For a playful theme, use colours such as deep purple, mustard yellow, pastel pink and dark teal. Combining lighter shades can create a fun and playful atmosphere, while darker tones such as purple and blue will create a homely feel in your interiors.
The luxe way
Yes, there are now ‘rich’ trends for your wall as well. These rich trends use bold colours to match a darker base. Designing your space in this way is perfect for the season given the comfortable feeling it brings. Paint your wall in a bright hue and add colourful accessories to a room to create depth in shades of deep purple or bold elements in colours such as red or yellow. A bunch of flowers can add the perfect finishing touch. We recommend that you consult an interior designer to give you a bit of perspective before you try it out on your walls.
