They’re a debated look for men, but they’re back in style this season. Jagruti Verma brings you tricks to help style the V-neck T-shirt, followed by her favourite picks
V-neck T-shirts may be one of the most debated trends when it comes to men’s wear. Critics of the trend usually find themselves at loggerheads with supporters, with the former citing chest hair as a reason to stay away from the trend and the latter highlighting the perks of the laidback style and comfort that they offer as a reason to get on board. A rule we like to live by is: if you like, go for it. If you’ve decided to sport the trend, here are a few tips that will help you style it right.
LOOKS TO STYLE
Designers Bhumika and Jyoti from the label Bhumika & Jyoti, advise you to wear your T-shirt with narrow, ankle-length trousers and complete the outfit with a hoodie for a fun, laid-back look. However, if you’re veering towards a more semi-formal look, team it with a light summer jacket or blazer.
PRINTS AND MORE
Menswear designer, Fahd Khatri, tells us that he doesn’t usually like the idea of V-neck T-shirts for men, citing chest hair as the reason. But, for those who disagree, he does have some tips. He tells us:
- Avoid wearing V-neck T-shirts that have prints on them. Keep it simple by picking solid colours such as navy blue or stone grey.
- Pairing a V-neck T-shirt with chinos or denims is a good idea. Throw a casual blazer over it to complete the look.
While he may not love V-neck T-shirts, he thinks that V-neck sweaters work very well on men. “Wear a striped or checked shirt with a collar and pull your V-neck sweater over it. This will add versatility to your wardrobe,” he suggests.
COLOUR MATTERS
Designers Chandrika and Raamz from RAAMZ, believe that paying close attention to things such as the fit and style of the T-shirt is very important when you’re buying and styling it. When it’s worn right, it can help you transform a humble T-shirt into a versatile piece of clothing. And, the colour that you pick also plays an important role. They share a few points to remember when you’re picking out a V-neck T-shirt.
- Soft pastels are a great choice if you want to wear a V-neck T-shirt to work.
- For a more casual look, pair a solid coloured T-shirt with denims or khakis.
- If you’re not sure what colour is best suited for the occasion, picking a navy blue T-shirt and pairing it with khaki pants is a safe bet.
- When you’re wearing a bold, dark hued T-shirt, remember to pair it with a lighter shade of bottoms.
