You don’t need to give your home a drastic makeover every festive season. But, as Christmas draws near, we’d all like a little holiday spirit around our home. Pearl Mathias tells you how to add a little festive cheer to your house in simple ways

We love to go all out during this merry time of the year. But, your Christmas decorations don’t have to break the bank. You can bring all the festive cheer to your home with some easy additions here and there, and the trick is to play around with the colours of the season — red, white and green. And besides, a glowing tree instantly enlivens the space. Designers across the city tell you how to bring the seasonal goodness into your home. Read on and get sprucing!

Gleeful glam

Shweta Mewara, creative director at Gulmohar Lane, believes that even a single piece of furniture can accentuate the décor of your entire living room. It could be your prized possession that will reflect the spirit of Christmas. “Simply invest in one red sofa or a chaise. You could also opt for beautiful cushions in silver, red and green to bring in the Christmas cheer. Besides the furniture and the cushions, stock vintage chandeliers, pendants and other light fixtures that are ideal for your Christmas décor and can be hung all round the year,” she suggests.

Celebratory look

Lighting and illumination is the quickest way to bring in some festive cheer, at least according to interior and product designer Shantanu Garg. “Suspended ceiling chandeliers, cluster lights and lamps are easy ways to dress up your home this season,” he says. He tells us how a crystal chandelier can add a little dazzle to any space in need of some twinkle and suggests that we pick classic candles to create an aura of warmth. “Smaller yet fascinating elements like tassels on door handles, fresh-leaved wreaths and painted branches with family photographs re-living past Christmas memories are some easy ways to set the tone for celebratory fervour,” he adds.

The red, white & green is all that’s seen

Director mirius interni for Stosa Cucine India, Nikhil Chopra explains how to enhance the most sociable area of your home for both your family as well as your guests. “Revamp your kitchen to seamlessly convert it into a space that can entertain guests during festivities. Add additional chairs around the kitchen counter-top for a family feast or turn it into a bar when a few guests are over,” he says. He also tells us that infusing in your walls a colourful dado with festive colours will help enliven a dreary looking kitchen. He suggests adding greens in the form of wall planters or creepers that not only look refreshing on the day but can gleam up the space at night when draped with fairy lights. “Using a pristine white on kitchen surfaces and cabinetry or even in the form of furniture will instantly give your space a festive mood. It’s elegant and perennial,” he adds.

A jolly good addition

According to Sonam Gupta, design head at Tangerine, “The best way to get into the mood and groove is by adding and altering your home space, so start with where it counts.” She suggests bringing in the joyous festival using popular earth tones especially shades of green, which can be used to decorate your floral cushions or wooden furniture with stripes, and encompass the finishing look with a beautiful Christmas tree. Rejuvenate your bedroom with retro combinations of black, white and red bedspreads for the season. “In order to give your home greater dimension and depth, use snow white curtains and decorate it with a metallic mix of either silver, gold or bronze traditional bows and Christmas balls,” she adds. She also suggests creating magic at the Christmas dinner table by using the most iconic combination of white and red tableware and dinner sets.
