If you haven’t realised it yet, your mouth is a natural communicator. A stinging pain on your tongue could be an indicator of a vitamin deficiency, hormonal changes or even food allergies. Your mouth is home to more than 500 strains of bacteria, both good and bad, which can cause problems in other parts of your body. But, simple lifestyle choices also result in your dental health being compromised. Read on to know about five warning signs that need attention.

A cracked tongue
Just like the wrinkles that appear on your face, cracks appear on your tongue as well. These can signal dehydration and may even have genetic causes, but they are commonly seen in people suffering from psoriasis. If you suffer from pain  or inflammation, ensure that the grooves between your teeth are clean. You can also use a tongue scraper to tackle this issue. It’s important to drink lots of water to keep dehydration at bay.

A gray-white tongue
If you see a thin film over your tongue, it may be accumulated gunk. These tiny bumps known as papillae can trap plaque. A cold or an infection can cause this to worsen. Drinking, smoking and eating spicy food can cause the papillae to get inflamed. Baking soda works as an antiseptic cleanser, so brush the top of your tongue with it. If you experience this, drink warm water with lemon or gargle with salt water.

A dry mouth
If you’ve had too much to drink or are nervous, it may result in a cottony sensation in your mouth. If you’re suffering from a sinus or a nasal congestion, you may feel this way too. But, if this stale feeling lasts no matter how much water you drink, it can be linked to the consumption of medication such as antidepressants, antihistamines and blood pressure drugs. Your mouth needs saliva not just to keep it moist, but to keep it clean as well. An easy way to tackle this is by cutting down on alcohol and drinking lots of water or even green tea, which has antimicrobial properties.

Overly tender gums
Do you experience bleeding when you brush or floss? If your gums appear red and swollen, you’re most likely suffering from gingivitis. If you don’t clean your teeth regularly or thoroughly, food particles may get caught between your teeth, which attracts bacteria that cause inflammation. The easiest way to get rid of this is by brushing your teeth properly and for the appropriate amount of time twice a day. But, if the redness or puffiness doesn’t subside, visit your dentist for a cleaning. 

Painful sores
Mouth ulcers usually occur when you’re suffering from a cold, emotional stress or fatigue, and your immune system is compromised. Several other things such as hormonal shifts as well as gastrointestinal issues can cause sores to form. Something as simple as biting the inside of your cheek can also cause a sore. Rinsing your mouth with warm water can help ease the inflammation. Cutting out spicy or acidic foods from your diet can also help.

If you’re suffering from any of the above, or even conditions such as stinging tongue spots, a bright red tongue or tongue ripples, pay heed to what your mouth is signalling and take remedial measures that can help soothe them.
