You just dyed your hair a beautiful shade and you’re anxious to make it last, but do you really need colour protecting shampoo? Khevna Pandit finds out why it’s recommended and brings you a list of her favourites to choose from

We’re sure you’re thrilled about your latest hair colour, but remember that getting it coloured is only half the battle won! In order to keep it looking as good as it did when you first stepped out of the salon, you have to learn how to maintain it. While most of us disregard the long list of shampoos and conditioners that our hairdressers recommend after our hair treatments (we’re guilty of this too — after all, how many expensive hair products can we stock up on?), it’s an important part of maintaining your new do for as long as possible. After all, faded bleach is not a particularly appealing colour. So, do shampoos that are specifically formulated for coloured hair really help to keep colour on for longer, or are they just a fancy marketing gimmick? Read on to see what we found out.

How effective are these shampoos?
It’s natural to pick the most attractively advertised shampoo, but now that you’ve had your hair dyed, it may be time to take a closer look at the ingredients instead of the brand ambassadors. Most shampoos contain about 15% of cleansers that are essential to cleanse dirt and grime from your hair, leaving it squeaky clean. However, these molecules (usually made of sodium or ammonium lauryl ether sulphate) are responsible for stripping your hair of colour particles as well. This is why, colour-protecting shampoo comes with a comparatively smaller amount of chemicals. This in turn helps you retain the hue for a longer period of time.

Do you really require them?
Before you invest in a colour protecting shampoo, remember that these only protect, and don’t add any colour to your hair. However, these can add a notable shine to your locks as well as luscious volume. Even though some shampoos have introduced dyes that stick to your hair (yellow dye for blond highlights and brown dyes for red or maroon shades) these fade away after a second wash. If you’re planning to get a suitable shampoo for your hair, invest in chemical-free formulae to maintain the shine and vibrancy of colour for as long as possible.

Now that you know why you need to use a specific shampoo targeted at coloured hair, it’s important to pick the right shampoo. We listed a few that can help you get started:
