CHOWING DOWN ON CHINESE

Confused about what to order on a lazy day at home? The Mumbai Mix Team orders in from the new menu at Mr. Chow’s to see if they should be on your dial list

Chinese food has always been the most popular type of takeout, and we haven’t tired of it yet. From our favourite ‘Indian-Chinese’ haunts to delivery services that promise a little more authenticity, we’re not too picky when we order the indulgent cuisine. So, when we heard that Mr. Chow’s had a new menu, we decided to see what was on offer. Although excited about the menu, we were disappointed by the delay in delivery. We waited an extra hour for our lunch to arrive on a busy work day! Most of the food was good enough to make up for this, but we hope the delivery hitch was just a one-off.

Our parcel consisted of six boxes of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes along with condiments. Two boxes contained rice and noodles — Vegetarian Fortune Rice (Rs 229) and the Shantung Noodles Chicken (Rs 289). While we loved how both staples complemented the gravy dishes we received, the noodles stood out because they tasted great without the gravy too. The flat, mildly flavoured mix included chicken and egg and is a really nice lunch option. But, the rice needed the gravy to boost its otherwise bland flavours.

Among the new vegetarian options, we tried the Diced Vegetables in Hunan Sauce (Rs 259) and Paneer Chilly Dry (Rs 269). The paneer was soft and flavourful, but the hunan sauce was a slight disappointment, resembling run-of-the-mill sweet and spicy Chinese gravy that offered nothing new.

What we really loved on the new menu were the chicken dishes, which included the Shanghai Roast Chicken (Rs 319), a slightly sweet dish with a nice texture, and the Chicken Black Pepper (Rs 289), a soft and juicy option with delicious gravy.

We would recommend scrolling through the new menu to find a few things you haven’t already tried here — although we would steer clear of the rice if you’ve got a craving for a flavourful meal.

We recommend

  • For seconds: Shanghai Roast Chicken (boneless)

  • An easy favourite for children: Shantung Noodles (chicken)

  • Ordering for a party: Paneer Chilly (dry)

  • Before you order: Their delivery radius is from Bandra to Andheri as well as Central and South Mumbai
