What happens when a candy store sets up shop in your city? You drop everything and head over for a sweet treat, of course! Pearl Mathias samples the goodies at PAPABUBBLE, the city’s first experiential candy brand
Founded in 2004 in Barcelona with the goal of resurrecting traditional artisanal candy-making recipes and techniques, PAPABUBBLE now makes its presence felt in 34 cities across four continents, including Mumbai, New York, Tokyo, Paris, Amsterdam, Sao Paulo and Dubai. The brand’s candy products are a favourite gifting item for creative designers across the world — and when we visited, we found out why!
Customers at PAPABUBBLE are invited to experience live candy-preparation shows daily at their Palladium store. The entire process, from mixing the colours and flavours to stretching and packaging the finished candy, is on display. On reaching the store, you will witness a 300-year-old craft that has been rejuvenated and reconstructed, with master candy makers taking you through the candy-making journey, while simultaneously hand-crafting the candy for you. And, this part theatre, part art and part production display is indeed one-of-a-kind. You’ll be left mesmerised as you watch your candy come alive! PAPABUBBLE has a wide range of products including hard rolled candy, fruit mixes, sour mix, clouds (marshmallows), bubblets (jujubes), lollipops, print-a-pops, pillow candy, soft chew mixes and a special limited edition Mumbai mix; starting at Rs 115 for 60g.
If you think you’re too old for a bite of candy, this place will make you think again. Apart from the regular flavours, they’ve added a little Indianisation with treats like Biryani (no, really!) and Kala Khatta. Don’t miss out on the Cinnamon, Sushi and Coffee flavours as well! We were told that the candy makers also assist customers in designing the perfect candy for gifts and celebrations. They combine flavours, colours, personal messages or designs and turn them into a customised candy ready to be savoured or gifted. A candy indulgence is reason to visit this place, but if that’s not enough, perhaps biting into a sweet message or a picture crafted on to your candy will leave you in awe.
