Short hair may swing in and out of style, but long hair will never go out of fashion. However, not everyone is blessed with long, luscious locks. We bring you a few tips for growing out your hair without a hitch
With long, flowing locks at one red carpet event and a stylish lob at the next, celebrities play with the length, texture, style and colour of their hair at the drop of a hat. However, since you’re not spending all day getting primped and primed at a salon and probably can’t afford all the extensions and wigs that go into creating their picture perfect looks, you will have to wait at least a few months for your hair to grow past your shoulders. In between your stylish short hair and that gorgeous long style, you will have to deal with an awkward phase as it grows out. If maintaining it is getting tiresome, but you want to make a graceful switch back to long hair, these tips should help.
Yes, water can help you achieve better, healthier hair! Drink at least two litres of water every day in order to keep your body hydrated and your hair strong. The pollution and dust in the city can leave your scalp devoid of its natural oils, hampering hair growth. Keeping yourself hydrated balances out the moisture, helping your hair to grow out faster.
CONDITION IT WELL
Don’t leave conditioner in your hair for too long, and don’t use too much of it. However, when we turned to expert Priyanjali Rajlakshmi Singh, who is currently pursuing a hairstyling course from Lakmé, we found that conditioning it regularly is a great idea. “Conditioning your hair daily may not be the best idea for everyone, since it depends on your hair type and texture. People who have dry hair must use a good conditioner to avoid breakage and split ends. As far as growing your hair out is concerned, it is ideal to condition it regularly in order to retain the necessary oils and protein that enhances its growth,” she tells us. However, she suggests having a word with your stylist, who will be able to help you choose the best conditioner to suit your hair type.
AVOID HEATING TOOLS
This is a good idea even if you’re not trying to grow your hair out, but even more important if you are. A quick straightening process, a little blow dry — we know these are great ways to get your hair looking great no matter how long or short it is. However, using heating tools on a daily basis will make your hair look dull and lose its lustre. If you want it to be healthy and grow out faster, avoid the styling tools for a while.
DON’T BRUSH IT WHEN IT’S WET
You may want to remove tangles or set it to a particular style, but we suggest using a very wide-toothed comb if you want to attempt this. Brushing your hair when it’s wet will lead to split ends and breakage, and hamper growth. Your hair strands are not as strong when wet as they are when they’re dry.
DON’T SKIMP ON VITAMINS
Vitamins help with keratin levels. And keratin isn’t just a treatment; it is a protein that enhances your hair health. So, remember that you need to take your vitamins every day in order to help your hair grow out quicker and healthier.
DON’T SHY AWAY FROM SCISSORS
We know that you’re trying to grow your hair out, but this doesn’t mean that you should shun the salon for months on end. Trimming your hair regularly will help to facilitate growth as well as keep it strong and healthy as it grows out. It will also keep split ends under control.
OIL IT UP
Sure, your natural oils will do their job, but you do need to oil your hair as well. Your hair needs more protein than you can give it in order for it to grow thick and long, and just your natural oils won’t supply it with enough lubrication. Use good hair oil that is rich in vitamin E and omega-9 fatty acids to help your hair grow out of that awkward phase in a jiffy.
MASSAGES DO HELP
Massages are indulgent, but not frivolous! They are also a very effective way to facilitate hair growth and keep your scalp healthy. We recommend gently rubbing your scalp with warm oil. The happier your scalp is, the faster your hair will grow.
