Gargi Bansod tells you why drinking vegetable juice early morning could be the key to boosting your energy and looks

If you’re an early riser and like to head to the sea faces and parks for a walk, then you’re likely to have seen juice vendors selling fresh vegetable juice to the morning walkers. Like the laughter club became popular, the trend of drinking juices has picked up too. Read on to find out why it helps to start your day with a juice.

WHY IS IT HEALTHY?
Pallavi Srivastava, nutritionist from Evolve Medspa tells us, “The best time to drink vegetable juice is in the morning as your stomach is still empty. This will stimulate your body to detoxify more toxins. Heavy foods in the morning slow our digestive systems down and make us sluggish, so it’s better to opt for a freshly prepared juice in the morning. The nutrients will be absorbed easily as it doesn't have other food to interfere with your body's cleansing.”

Easier and faster nutrient absorption: Juice helps you absorb all the nutrients from the vegetables. Juices allow your body to absorb larger amounts of nutrients because the process of digestion that is necessary when you eat whole food is bypassed.

Optimal vegetable consumption: Some people may find eating vegetables difficult, but it can be accomplished with a glass of vegetable juice. Juices also allow you to add a wider variety of vegetables to your diet.

Enhanced immune system: Juices also ensure that the body is getting sufficient amounts of phytochemicals, substances in plants that are considered among the most powerful ways to fight disease. Also, antioxidants and other immune enhancing properties are found concentrated in juices.

Increased metabolic rate: Enzymes in fresh vegetables convert food into body tissue and energy and increase metabolism.

Good for your organs: Juices reduce the work your digestive organs have to do and increase the health of your liver and kidneys.

Weight loss: If you drink fresh juice you are likely to lose weight. The body loves natural foods and you don’t need sugar. You can kick start your metabolism without the calories.

Concentration: Vegetable juices increase your concentration levels and make you feel energised and lively throughout the day.

WHAT TO KEEP IN MIND
Drink your vegetable juice right away or store it carefully Vegetable juice is highly perishable so it's best to drink all of it immediately. However, if you're careful, you can store it for up to 24 hours with only moderate nutritional decline. To store juice, put it in a glass jar with an airtight lid and fill it to the top without letting in any air. Store it in the fridge till you consume it.

Listen to your body The juice should taste pleasant and not be nauseating. You must listen to the feedback your body gives. After drinking juices, your stomach should be calm the whole day. If it is churning or growling or generally making its presence known, you probably had something you should not consume.

Clean your juicer thoroughly after every use You need to clean your juicer immediately after you juice to prevent any remnants from contaminating the juicer with mold growth. Use an old toothbrush to clean the metal grater.

Dental care warning Natural sugars and acids can, if left in your mouth and on your teeth, soften and erode your tooth enamel. So, it's important to brush your teeth twenty minutes after drinking the juice.

GOOD juices
Pallavi tells us that most vegetables contain high levels of phytonutrients and can be juiced. Beetroot, broccoli, red cabbage, white cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, celery, lettuce cucumber, radish and spinach all of these are rich in vitamins such as beta-carotene, folic acid, small amounts of B1, B2, B3, B5 and B6 and also in minerals such as calcium, potassium, sodium, small amounts of copper, iron and zinc. Bitter gourd juice is a very healthy option for diabetics.

FRUIT JUICE VS. VEG JUICE
“Fruit juices are referred to as cleansers and vegetable juices are called builders. Fruit juices raise blood sugar levels quicker than vegetable juices. Vegetables generally contain less sugar and fewer calories. Most fruits are more palatable but vegetables are more valuable nutrition wise,” says Pallavi.

Tips

  •  Wash all vegetables carefully.
  •  Be sure to juice all the stems and leaves with your vegetables as they are rich in nutrients.
  •  Drink juice on an empty stomach for best nutrient absorption. Remember to chew your juices!

MAKE IT INTERESTING

  •  If you would like to make your juice a bit more palatable, especially in the beginning, you can add quarter to half a lemon, cranberries if you like them or fresh ginger.
  •  Use leftover pulp from the juicer. Organic pulp from can be used in a number ways such as in raw salads or added right back into your next glass of juice.
