Sticking To 300!

Tuesday, September 02, 2014

No, we aren’t fanatics of the action-packed film. Instead, we are talking about the healthiest snacks you can much on that are all under 300 calories. Shirley Mistry tells you more

Midnight munchies, a mid-morning slump or 4pm huger pangs — call it what you will, but there is no way to completely curb hunger pangs, no matter what time they affect you. It is easy to lose track of what you’re eating when a hunger pang catches you off-guard in the middle of a busy work day, or during a marathon study session. So, take a look at these healthy snacks, commit them to memory and say goodbye to oily chips and buttery biscuits.

Rice crackers with Provolone Cheese
Let’s start with a delicious, gourmet-like snack to fight a rumbling tummy. Pick two baked rice crackers and top them with a slice or two of Provolone cheese for a delicious snack. You can also microwave them for 10-15 seconds to make the cheese melt slightly. Sprinkle some sea salt and pepper on them for extra flavour.

Hummus & Pita Bread
Not only is this a delicious appetiser, it is also a very healthy snack. Five mini pita pockets, along with 2-3 tbsp of hummus makes a healthy, nutritious snack. You can increase the quantity of hummus (if you want to eat fewer carbohydrates) by reducing the number of pita pockets.

Cheese & Tomato Pizza
Yes, if you eat it in moderation, it is okay to indulge in a pizza once in a while. Make your own tomato sauce and top it off with a thin layer of cheese. Two regular slices, or one big slice of pizza is a perfect snack, and it is still under 300 calories.

Tomato, Spinach & Goat’s Cheese Omelette
If you are particularly hungry, make yourself an omelette with ½ a tomato, 2 eggs, 75g goat’s cheese and a handful of spinach. Not only is this extremely nutritious, this omelette is delicious, quick to prepare and will keep you full for several hours.

Lemon Sorbet
Cooling, sweet and tangy all at once, lemon sorbet is an excellent option for when your body is craving a sweet treat. It is healthier than ice cream because it is made from water, so a scoop will cool you off and satisfy your sweet tooth, without piling on the calories.

Bagel & Cream Cheese
For times when you just can’t shake off the urge to indulge in carbohydrates, or a bread-based delight, this snack is extremely satisfying. Spread low-fat cream cheese on half a bagel and eat it along with 2-3 figs. Not only will your carbohydrate craving be completely satisfied, your body will also get a boost of energy from the figs.

Popcorn
We love a crunchy, savoury snack! Popcorn has tons of fibre, so a small portion will help keep you full for long. It is also extremely healthy, provided you don’t pick options that include extra butter or double doses of cheese. A 75g portion is an ideal snack, and enough to tide you over to lunch during your mid-morning hunger pangs.

Tuna Salad
Mix together a can of tuna flakes and ¼ cup of hummus with salt, pepper, honey mustard and some celery for added crunch and flavour. Not only is this salad nutritious, packed with omega-3 acids, vitamins and minerals, it is also delicious. Spoon the salad into small lettuce cups for a healthy, attractive appetiser.

Blueberries
Blueberries are packed with antioxidants and also help boost your focus and brain power, making them a healthy snack. Extremely low in calories, they also help build immunity. So, the next time you are hungry, snack on a cup of these berries.
