Neat shoes, clean clothes, germ-free hands... we go to great lengths to keep ourselves well groomed. But, Pooja Salvi tells you why reaching out for mouthwash to do the same for your gums may not be as advantageous as you think!
We’re constantly washing dirt off our feet, using handkerchiefs to wipe our faces, sanitising our hands, washing, bathing and exfoliating ourselves — we’re obsessed with being clean and well groomed. This collective concern about germs has its own advantages — it stops the spread of diseases, germs and viruses. Consider how washing your hands prevents the spread of harmful disease-causing germs and how brushing your teeth promotes oral health.
Despite all these advantages, some scientists believe that we overdo it in our quest to stay clean and healthy. They suggest that we could weaken our bodies’ defences by our constant struggle to stay clean. A few germs here and there can actually prove to be beneficial for your body. Sounds strange? Let us explain.
Imagine your body is a castle and a knight guards it. Now, if this knight is faced with a throng of invaders, he will be inconsequential as he barely has any practice warding off threats. He will not be able to protect the castle. However, if the same guard is faced with one invader every day, he never really runs out of practice and will probably end up doing a better job. Our immune system is the same in the way that it needs constant practice and preparation to be effective.
Apart from this, there are several other ways in which we damage our immune system function. One of the most common factors is the overuse of antimicrobial products — germ-fighting substances that can lead to an overactive immune system.
One specific ingredient present in mouthwashes, toothpastes and hand soaps that is of particular concern is triclosan. A study conducted by researchers of Johns Hopkins University found that children with high levels of triclosan in their bodies were more likely to have high levels of immune chemicals in their bodies. This is similar to those suffering from allergies. Your body becomes sensitive to every foreign substance in your bloodstream and goes into overdrive fighting them.
There are studies that indicates the presence of triclosan might contribute to antibiotic resistance by making bacteria immune to the effects of antibiotics, making them ineffective at protecting you from diseases. If you’re worried about whether triclosan is harmful for you and your family, check the list of ingredients on the product and ask your doctor if it’s okay for you to use it!
