At some point, most of us have been victims of the party binge, but even if you’re not a heavy drinker, alcohol still affects your system if you’re a regular one. Pooja Salvi tells you how your body reacts when you ditch the drinks for just two weeks

You’re not a daily drinker, but you’re out every weekend with your friends, indulging in post-work drinks and talking about what a busy week you’ve had. However, are those apparently harmless cocktails really that harmless? Rather than giving you a detailed explanation, with statistics that claim to reduce blood cholesterol by 5% and liver fat by 15% (see what we did there?), we tell you how quitting alcohol for just two weeks can benefit your body.

Get back on track in the gym
While it may seem unnecessary to cut down on alcohol if you only drink on the weekend, it will be a big help at the gym, since you’re likely to cut down on the unnecessary calories that you are otherwise consuming. It has also been proven that excessive alcohol consumption can reduce your muscle’s ability to grow and develop, ruining all the hard work you’ve put in.

Your skin feels hydrated
Alcohol, like caffeine, is a diuretic. It saps water from your body, leaving you dehydrated. Your skin feels tight, irritated and dry. This obviously has something to do with the damage that alcohol inflicts on your liver. Putting down that glass is the first step to getting great skin.

You sleep better
Stumbling to bed after a night out seems like an easy thing to do; except for the wretched feeling the next morning. Even if you don’t drink much but drink
regularly, alcohol has long lasting effects on your sleeping patterns. Alcohol is known to disrupt the deeper stages of sleep, making you wake up tired
and deflated.

You feel energised
What is the one upside to sleeping better? Waking up feeling fresh! On an average, adults require around seven to nine hours of sleep every night in order to function better. Getting this sleep ensures better concentration and less mood swings.

Cutting down on alcohol does not mean cutting down on fun
People are conscious of being thought of as less fun if they don’t drink socially. However, there are several other options available at that bar your friends are visiting this weekend.
