We all know the benefits of vitamin C and leafy greens. But, did you know that the combination can do wonders for your health? Dev Goswami explains the benefits of combining kale and lemon
We’ve told you a lot about various food combinations and how they benefit your health. Today, we are going to tell you about lemon and kale. Find out about the respective benefits of these two foods and read on, as we tell you how the two foods can work together to give you health benefits greater than what they would on their own.
Kale
Kale is often termed as the queen of greens and rightly so, as they are a nutritional powerhouse. One of the best reasons to eat this leafy green is that it is low in calories, high in fibre and has almost zero fat — exactly what you need to consume if you’re trying to lose weight. It is also rich in antioxidants, can help lower your cholesterol levels and contains high quantities of vitamin A, C and K. Just like lemon, kale too helps detoxify your body and has anti-inflammatory properties. One of the best benefits of kale, however, is that it’s extremely high in iron.
Lemon
This citric fruit is immensely healthy and one of its best properties is that it helps flush toxins out of your body, which is why you should begin your day with a few drops of lemon juice, mixed with warm water. Another great benefit of lemon is, quite obviously, its vitamin C content — which helps boost your immune system. It is equally rich in potassium, calcium and pectin fibre (which helps improve colon health). Lemon also has antibacterial and antiseptic properties and aids in the production of digestive juices and bile, which play an important role in keeping you healthy.
The combination
The next time you make a salad, add a few drops of fresh lemon juice. Why? Because the vitamin C from the lemon increases the amount of iron that is absorbed by your body. Also, while both the foods are antioxidants on their own and help detoxify your body, the combination has much better results. Lemon promotes the formation of antioxidants in your liver, which, when combined with fibre and chlorophyll from kale, makes the detoxification process more effective. Apart from this, the combination will also boost your immune system and increase muscle strength.
