GATE i.e. the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is considered as one of the toughest all-India examinations, that checks the student’s knowledge of undergraduate subjects related to the stream of engineering and science. It is a computer-based standardised test that is organised by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology. The competitive exam is hard to crack but with persistent hard work and determination, many students ace the exam every year to get a seat in the best colleges & PSUs of the country

The GATE score is vital for aspirants as it helps them get admission into post-graduate courses in streams like engineering and technology etc. Gate score is also a pre - requisite for applying to most of the major Public Sector Undertakings.

The Exam Pattern:
The exam is of three hours duration and consists of 65 questions. Gate is of 100 marks and the questions comprise both multiple choice questions and numerical answer type questions. Currently, Gate is held for 23 streams. Some of them are Mechanical, Electronics & Communication, Electrical, Computer Science & IT, Civil, Instrumentation etc.

GATE 2016 and its new syllabus:
The syllabus of Gate 2016 has been revised and many topics have been added in some of the subjects. In the stream of Mechanical Engineering, topics have been added to five subjects. The subjects include Strength of Materials, Theory of Machines, Machine Design, Heat Transfer and Thermodynamics. The topics that are added to these subjects include Rosettes, testing of materials with universal testing machine, testing of hardness and impact strength, dynamic analysis of linkages, cams, governors, balancing of reciprocating and rotating masses and gyroscope, design of springs, Heisler’s charts, air and gas compressor, thermodynamics relation, thermodynamics properties and Table.

In the field of Electrical Engineering, two topics namely Drives and Servo & Stepper Motors have been removed from two subjects, Power Electronics and Electrical machine respectively. In the subject Measurements, Potentio Metric Recorder, serial and parallel communication is removed.

In the stream of Electronics and Communication engineering, the topic interpolation of discrete time signals and digital filer design technique is added to the subject Signal System. In Analog Electronics, Voltage Reference Circuits has been added and Analog CMOS circuit is removed. Such changes have also been made to other subjects including Digital Circuit, EDC, EMT, Communications and Mathematics.

In Computer Science and Information Technology, changes have been made to four subjects namely, DSA, TOC, SEWT and Mathematics.
For Civil engineering, the syllabus of subjects like ENGG Mechanics, Construction Material and Management, Transportation and Surveying has been changed.

In the stream of Instrumentation Engineering, the syllabus of two subjects i.e., AOBI and Transducer are changed. In the subject Measurements, RMS Meters, Voltage and Current Scaling is added.

In a nutshell, Gate 2016 will check the basic knowledge of students, hence the questions are expected to be more conceptual. Also, the questions may be more twisted and research-oriented this time. Students can use online calculators for solving the questions in the exam, which will make it easy for them to complete the paper on time.

Eligibility Criteria:
In order to appear for the Gate exam, it’s crucial for aspirants to meet the eligibility criteria. It requires aspirants to have a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field and even those who are final year students can appear for the exam. Students who have completed their masters in any such field or those who are final year students can also sit for Gate.

In order to nail this competitive exam, it is important that students follow these tips which will help them immensely in their preparation:

  • Prepare thoroughly:  The first and the foremost tip to achieve good marks in Gate is to start preparing for it from the early years of college. This will give students ample time to be slow and steady in the preparation and not rush and succumb to last minute distractions.

  • Make a timetable: Since Gate scores are important to get admission into post graduate programs of the best colleges in the country, aspirants need to be very meticulous about how they prepare for it. A proper timetable at hand will guide them on how to move forward, which subject to study first and many such things.

  • Revision is a must:  Revising the entire syllabus at least two to three times before the final exam is the best way to score well in Gate. Revision clears each and every concept and helps students in gaining better understanding of the subject. Once students are good with the basics, it becomes easy to give the exam.

  • Follow the Gate 2016 pattern: Since the syllabus is changed, students are recommended not to leave any subject just because they don’t like it or because of paucity of time. They should be thorough with the basics and can take help from their friends for clearing doubts. They should also get used to online calculators and practise sample papers from Gate 2008, Gate 2002 and Gate 1996 as these were also organised by IISc.

Tips for Repeaters:

  • Analyse: Students giving the exam for the second or third time must assess the mistakes they did in their previous exam and prepare accordingly. They should try to identify their weak as well as strong areas so as to get a good understanding of how they can crack the exam.

  • Test Series: The online test series offered by many portals these days can be of immense help. The series will help them solve a variety of questions and will prepare them holistically for the final exam. They can calculate the average marks they get in these series and then analyse the areas in which they can increase their scores, in order to get a better ranking.

  • Time management: Most students are not able to clear the exam due to slow speed or because they don’t know how to manage time effectively. Those who are repeating the exam should carefully examine the time they take while solving a particular test paper and come up with solutions that can help them in managing the available time optimally.

  • Short Notes: Short notes have always been the best way to learn. While studying for the exam, students can make such notes by writing a summary of each topic they learn. At the time of revision, they can just go through these notes and voila, they will be ready to crack the exam!

Gate is held once a year and is the benchmark for various colleges to take students for the post graduate programs & PSUs. Many changes have been made in the syllabus of the exam which might pose difficulty for students, especially repeaters. A proper preparation is the only tool through which
they can sail through the exam easily, score well and get admission into good colleges.
