The Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) has invited applications for the 33rd batch of its Post Graduate Diploma in Packaging (PGDP). The course is one of the only two advanced courses in packaging in the world – the other being offered in the US. The IIP is a national apex body set up in 1966 by the packaging and allied industries and the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India.

The concept of packaging has acquired more value than ever now with the ‘shopping’ experience receiving a major boost with the coming of malls and departmental stores. Popularly known as a ‘silent’ salesman, packaging helps consumers quickly understand what the product is all about. In actuality, it is the science, art and technology of enclosing and protecting products for distribution, storage, sale and use.

For a factor that adds value to the product and connects with marketing, the packaging industry requires skilled personnel with creativity and a strong background in business, engineering, and science. It is therefore that in 1985, the IIP decided to take a step forward in the direction of packaging education and introduced the Post Graduate Diploma in Packaging course. What started with 15 students has now metamorphosed to a 300-student strong course and boasts of placements in some of the top MNCs.

It provides flexibility in designing programmes that prepare packaging professionals who are capable of meeting the future challenges in the industry. Headquartered in Mumbai, the course is conducted at IIP centres in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Hyderabad.

The course that has contributed immensely to the growth of the sector covers the entire Packaging Industry, Packaging Technology, Packaging Education, Packaging Information and Packaging Promotion. Fresh graduates in science or engineering who desire to make a career in packaging can apply for the programme that comprises of classroom sessions along with visits to industries to study various packaging processes and technologies. This course is open for all graduates in science, technology, Pharmaceutical science, engineering and allied fields. Spanning over four semesters, three are at the campus while the fourth requires students to work on projects in different industries in any part of the country. IIP campuses offer state-of-the-art Research & Development Department, Training & Education Department, Consultancy wing, Various export promotion, exhibitions, Awards, pulication and Library along with a world-class packaging testing facility.
