Get ready for NEET counseling; choose your college wisely

The results of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2017 are out and aspiring doctors and dentists can now apply for a seat in their preferred medical/dental college. The counseling session for students who have cleared NEET will be conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee, which is expected to begin from 3rd July 2017. The counseling will be conducted in two rounds on online mode only. In every state, medical colleges will hold 85% seats for their native students and 15% for students from other states.

A lot of research and information need to be conducted on the college before choosing an institution. Given below are 9 points to keep in mind before zeroing in on your preferred choice of college.

1) National ranking of the college: While finalising your options, it is mandatory to look for the national-level ranking of the college. The ranking/rating is based on factors such as the quality of students, academic productivity, research output, industry interface, etc. The reputation and brand name of the college help students at the time of campus placements or while seeking a job across the country and abroad.

2) Regional comfort & language: If a student from the North East has decided to choose a college in the South, then he/she should have a sound understanding of the first or second language used in the state for easier communication. There are chances that a student who chooses a college away from his/her hometown face language barriers and is unable to adjust to the climatic conditions of the city. Therefore, every student looking for a college in a far-off city should do a thorough research and make a wise decision.

3) Quality of students and faculty members: Before you make a decision, ask a few seniors about the student-teacher ratio, faculty members, infrastructure facilities, etc. and conduct your own research to make an informed decision. Find out whether students are provided with timely academic support and whether they are inspired and challenged to achieve academic success.

4) Active campus life: Every student needs to strike a balance between his/her college and personal life. While studies are important, it is equally necessary for a student to make the most out of his/her campus life. Ensure that the college conducts recreational activities and there are active clubs and organizations to take part in.

5) Hostel and other facilities: After a tiring day at college, you do not want to run errands fixing the dripping pipes, broken beds, etc. Make it a point to ask seniors about the common hostel facilities including dining halls, proper mess, reading rooms and common rooms with provision for several indoor games.

6) College in the same city as of residence: Think twice before you choose a college in a different city. You need to check your finances and make a wise decision. Choosing a college in the same city as your residence comes with several advantages. A student will be able to concentrate better on studies and avoid unwanted expenses as well.

7) Quality of hospital & popularity amongst hiring hospitals: More the number of patients in the hospital, the more will be the variety of cases that a student will be able to see during their clinical postings. Also, find out what reputation the college holds amongst other medical practitioners.

8) International reputation & exposure: Is the college of your choice internationally renowned or does it invite guest lecturers from international hospitals to conduct classes or offer exposure? Gaining global exposure will help students to get a fair idea and understanding on what’s happening around the world

9) Alumni base & network: Is the alumni network of your selected college strong and active? Alumni networks aid students in advancement throughout the course of their lives and also keep students informed about job opportunities in the market.
