As exams are closing by, the anxiety and stress levels are all up among students. Parents too, are not far behind in making sure their chid has studied enough to scored enough marks to get admissions in pretigious colleges. This is the crucial time which decides the level of pressure a child can take, and how well the parent handles it. Amidst the chaos of revision and tuition classes, the parents often get confused on how to handle the challenge of academics and competition with peers, which is entirely new for the youngsters.

The students of Class X and XII are now gearing up to achieve their goals. In midst of preparing for what are dubbed as  “high stake exams”, students face exam anxiety and do not have enough time to share it, or simply do not realise they need help coping. iCall – A telephone and email based service by Tata Institute of Social Sciences, run by professionally trained counselors, who can speak in six different languages – English, Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi and Malayalam address the concerns of students in distress.

Paras Sharma, Program Coordinator of iCall, said that this service has been active for about four years now. “The service is for everyone, not just for students. However, with the exam season approaching, we take special care of students who need help. Sometimes, even the parents call as they get worried if atheir child has prepared well enough or is he or she not focused enough,” Sharma said. He thinks that students can have behavioural changes while going through such stress. “Crying easily, losing appetite or withdrawing from social interactions can be a sign for help. There is also a taboo of going to professional mental health experts as people think something is wrong with the child. With iCall, we want to accomplish helping people with professional psychologists, but on a phone call,” Sharma added.

To reach out to iCall, dial 022-25521111 or write to TISS by email on [email protected] anytime between 8 am to 10 pm Monday to Saturday.
