A quartet of 19-year-old youngsters are spreading the 'Swachcha Bharat' message through Garbage ATM that can offer reward points if you throw garbage in the designated spots

While the government is trying hard to push the 'Swachcha Bharat' initiative and move towards a cleaner and greener city, these 19-year old youngsters from Sandip University’s Sandip Polytechnic, Nashik have invented a Smart Dustbin called 'KRRYP Garbage ATM' that helps to not only dispose garbage but also acquire coupons or cash back offers to encourage more to dispose waste within dustbins.

Yash Gupta, Rahul Patil, Rushikesh Kasar and Prakash Sonawane have prepared these garbage bins that can be placed at public places, residential areas, industries and commercial complexes. It is an interactive garbage bin that helps keep the surroundings clean. “At every spot, there would be two bins placed with A and B on it respectively, along with a LCD display screen and a RFID reader. There is a Card which has to be swapped first, as soon as the information about the individual is loaded on the RFID reader, a General Knowledge question pops on the display. From the two options available, you need to choose between A and B by dumping the garbage in that particular bin. Based on the amount of garbage thrown into the bin, some points will be added on the card. This can be later used for recharge or as shopping points,” said Yash Gupta, a student.

“This is our way to attract more people towards dumping waste at designated places rather than littering around. For the sake of the extra points or cashback they will prefer dumping the garbage in the Garbage ATM, especially youngsters will be keen as they can recharge their phones with the reward points. This will ensure that the habit of not littering around is instilled at a young age itself. While dumping the waste if they enter a wrong answer than they will not get any points and hence it is also essential to have good general knowledge so that they can get the reward points,” added Gupta.

These students, who came up with this Garbage ATM follow the motto: 'When you live for a strong purpose, then hard work isn’t an option, it’s a necessity.' They also won the 'Narsee Monjee Best Project Award' at Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT University, Vellore, Tamil Nadu.

Sandip N Jha, Chairman, Sandip University said, "We are really glad that our students are coming up with such innovative concepts. We believe in encouraging them and providing support so that they are motivated enough to think out-of-the-box."
