ACTOR’S LOVE FOR LEARNING

Wednesday, July 06, 2016

“A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instill a love of learning,” says actress, Asmita Sood.

I did my Bachelors in Commerce from Maitreyi College, Moti Bagh Nagar, Chanakyapuri in New Delhi.  I also did an Advanced Diploma in French Language. My college had a red brick exterior and looked very dignified and beautiful. We were free to build installations in our campus which was a lot of fun. Our college was a visual spectacle. Students had painted few walls and they were awesome. Physical ambience is important just like the environment and our college had both these aspects. We had greenery all around. The college was known for its garden and always won prizes for the same. The entire campus was scenic and beautiful. The red bricks against the greenery were very scenic and calming.

As it was a girl’s college I was not ragged, but was extremely nervous on the first day of my college. Meeting my batch-mates was like meeting my seniors. I was a fast learner and adjustable by nature. I was a sensitive person and not so extrovert initially. Ragging is just not needed, introduction casually is fine. I believe you do not have to torture or make fun of someone to introduce and get to know each other.

Being commerce students we were more inclined towards learning math and accounts. We also used to help each other in accounts. Studies were great fun because I was very passionate about it. Students in commerce field surely bond a lot as team work is part of everything we do. College life was a learning experience. It made me grow as a person.

We had a fantastic college canteen that served excellent food. From rajma chawal to bread pakoras  and the adrak wali chai in winters; we had it all. I think we have finished most of our project, studies sitting in the canteen. Food brings people together. Our favorite socializing places were CCD, Bikano Chat Café, the Taj, and Select City Walk Mall. We were a group of four. Friends from our college days are a very important part of your formative years.
One of the most beautiful qualities of true friendship is to understand and to be understood. This is how my friends were. I used to travel to college by auto rickshaw. I lived as a Paying Guest and my friends would often bring home food for me.

When I was in the final year, a group of eight people, including myself, used to play bat ball in the PG during our exam times in the main hall of the PG. We did not have the right equipment to play. The ball used to be a foil paper ball and a frying pan used to serve as a bat. We used to have a lot of fun together. All incidents with my friends in the group were very special to me and they are etched in my memory. We used to enjoy ourselves a lot. College life never comes back. Therefore you must enjoy it to the fullest without compromising on your studies.

My education helped me know exactly what goes behind working on a project even though you are in front of the camera. The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. The goal of true education is intelligence plus character. This is what helps me in my career today. Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. I also learned one thing that is the roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet. It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it. Life without education is like food without salt.

As told to Monarose Sheila Pereira
