IF you saw the epic romance disaster film ‘Titanic’ in 1997, here is a minititanic type flick with all the ingredients of romance and disaster. We were all glued to ‘Titanic’, be it adults or kids, we loved every moment of the mega unsinkable ship, and what we get here is a moderate suspense and intense water rescue mission, once again based on a true story.
It is 18th February 1952, off the coast of New England when a massive storm splits two oil tankers, SS Fort Mercer and the SS Pendleton in half. While the Fort Mercer was able to get off distress signals and attract help, the SS Pendleton was unlucky trapping more than 30 sailors inside the tanker's sinking stern. The splitting of the Pendleton resulted in the sinking of its fore section and the loss of a few its commanding officers and radios. With only basic radio communications on board, the rear section of the ship is taking on water. In a few hours the ship will sink. Some of the crewmen contemplate going out in the lifeboats, which are too small for a storm they are in. The only way out is obeying orders from chief engineer Ray Sybert (Casey Afleck) who figures out a way to steer the crippled ship to run aground and then await rescue teams.
Before we come to the storm, we meet Coast Guard crew member Webber (Chris Pine), who is dating Miriam (Holliday Grainger). Miriam fixes a date to marry him but getting permission from his commanding officer Daniel Cluff (Eric Bana) to sanction his leave, seems a daunting task.
Then the storm arrives and Webber is ordered by Officer Cluff to attempt the rescue of SS Pendleton. With the use of a small lifeboat and three crewmembers, can Webber attempt a dramatic rescue of the 32 lives on the Pendleton and bring them back. Will Webber see Miriam again? It’s mission impossible. Their only hope is a miracle.
