With a slightly scary DVD cover, don’t expect the film to be a frightening horror film. If you are looking for scares, this is not your movie, but if you are looking for a thriller with a few suspenseful moments, then this is for you. Though the film takes it own pace to cover what it wants to say, you have to follow the script very closely if you really want to understand it.
When eleven-year old Cameron (David Mazouz) is possessed by a demon and is unresponsive to traditional Catholic exorcism rites, Vatican representative Camilla Marquez (Catalina Sandino Moreno) recommends the services of the wheelchair bound Dr. Seth Ember (Aaron Eckhart). Ember has successfully exorcized demons not by the usual Catholic chanting and rituals but by actually going into the minds of possessed people, trying to control them by telling them that the demon is controlling them and offering them a way to fight the demon off.
When Cameron’s mother Lindsay (Carice van Houten) meets Ember, she is not convinced that he can save her son. But with no other way out, she gives into Ember’s method of bringing her child back. When Ember takes on the demon which has possessed Cameron, which he reveals to be Maggie Grant (Natalija Nogulich), he learns that it’s the same demon responsible for killing his wife and son and crippling him for life in a head-on car accident.
Ember takes the help of Cameron’s estranged father, and with his assistants Oliver (Keir O’Donnell) and Riley (Emily Jackson) tries to overthrow the demon. Ember also pleads with the demon to take him instead of Cameron. It’s a win or lose situation that may result in the death of either Cameron or Ember. Does Ember manage to free Cameron from the clutches of the demon or will Ember succumb to the demon. Watch the exciting climax unfurl before you.
There are a few special effects to bring the film to a degree of horror.
