If the DVD cover shows a monster out to ruin a city, watch the movie before you come to any conclusions of it being an out and out monster flick. This sci fi superhero rom com is unlike any monster movie you have seen before, for it has a story line that reflects on the human side based, though the final moments reveal the monster in full action. The film pulls at the heartstrings, as well as tickles your funny bone, dealing with the subjects of alcoholism, separation, hating of one ’s self and taking back control of your own life.
Gloria (Anne ‘One Day’ Hathaway) is a New York party girl heavy into drinking and having a fun time with friends. After a long night out with friends, she returns to her boyfriend home in a drunken state. Seeing her condition, Tim (Dan Stevens, ‘Beauty and the Beast’) kicks her out of the apartment and tells her to get her life back. She heads to a small town where she bumps into her old friends, including Oscar (Jason Sudekis) who gives her a job at his bar. Oscar helps her out in setting up her apartment, at the same time trying to rekindle a long standing crush.
While Gloria slowly picks up the pieces, a gigantic Godzilla-like monster terrorizes Seoul, South Korea, killing hundreds of innocents. Soon, Gloria discovers that there is an odd but powerful connection between her and the creature. Gloria shares her secret with Oscar and shows him the playground where she controls the monster. When Gloria begins to date one of Oscar’s friends, in revenge Oscar tries to control Gloria and takes the role of the monster by using the same playground to create havoc in her life. Gloria must try to fight off Oscar before he can cause damage over Seoul. But that may not be easy.
While the night images are blurry sometimes, the sound blasts come packed with depth and strong bass. Enjoyable.
