Amour
Rs. 599/-
Cast:
Jean-Louis Trintignant, Emmanuelle Riva and Isabelle Huppert
Written and Directed By: Michael Haneke.

A prize winner from the Cannes Film Festival, this is a moving tale of love and tenderness in the worst of times. The film won an Academy Award in 2013 for Best Foreign Language Film at the 85th Academy Awards, and was nominated in four categories: Best Picture, Best Actress in a Leading Role (Emmanuelle Riva), Best Original Screenplay (Michael Haneke) and Best Director (Michael Haneke).

‘Amour’ has a very simple plot. Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant) and Anne (Emmanuelle Riva) are an octogenarian couple living together in Paris. Both are retired music teachers. Their daughter, also a musician, lives in Britain with her family. One day, while having breakfast with her husband, Ann has a stroke and is paralyzed down her right hand side. Their lives change forever after this and their bond of love is severely tested in this trying time.

After a short stint at the hospital, Ann wants Georges to promise her that whatever happens, he would never admit her to the hospital again. Ann's harrowingly physical and mental decline worsens with each passing day as Georges attempts to care for her at home as she wishes. Their neighbors are the only source of solace they have to source groceries and other daily items. When their daughter visits them, a conflict erupts between her and Georges. The nurses who help are incompetent to handle Ann’s failing health. With no one by their side, Georges has to make some critical decision on the future for him and his wife. The rest of the movie focuses on how Georges looks after Ann as her deteriorating state challenges their relationship.

You have to be in a certain frame of mind to appreciate this film. This film reminds us about the situation in our own country, of so many aged people living lonely lives after their children have left for greener pastures. Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva deserves all the praise for great performances. The film is in French with English subtitles.
