We didn’t know that the Whistling Woods International (WWI) film institute had a fashion department until WWI president Meghna Ghai Puri posted on social media about the annual graduation fashion show ‘Aiyanna’. ‘Aiyanna’, now in its fourth year, was held last week and saw such luminaries as fashion designers Aparna Badlani, Neeta Lulla, Amy Billimoria and celebrity photographer Subi Samuel attend the event in Goregaon. Nineteen collections (no less!) were showcased by graduating students as they competed for top honours in what turned out to be a veritable fashion show. Some of the fashion collections showcased were titled – Fossil from Hell, Pakarnnattam, Past and the Future in Present, Life Without Greys, The Zestful Tranquillity, Lights and Shadows, Sheep Rock, Mardaani etc – giving an idea of the tremendous diversity and brilliance of the student designers. What’s different about the fashion institute at WWI is that it comes with a film association – students get to express themselves by making films on fashion in collaboration with the cinema department of the institute. Many of the graduating students’ films were also being judged by an accomplished jury who had a tough time deciding the final winners! Says Meghna: “It was an amazing feeling for me to watch the graduating students. These are days that make all of our hard work worth it. To see them on stage with top models wearing their clothes was especially fulfilling.” Adds the president: “It made us so proud to see the jury praise them for their work. And especially for the unique idea of the fashion films made in collaboration with our film students.”
