The world’s largest costume party – the Met Gala -- was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on Monday. The theme this year was Camp: Notes on Fashion. Based on a 1964 essay by author and activist Susan Sontag. the essay discusses how parody, artifice, theatricality and exaggeration are expressed in fashion. The Met on Monday as a result saw the likes of Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Anna Wintour, Cardi B, Serena Williams, Jennifer Lopez, Donatella Versace, Jared Leto, Kylie and Kendall Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Priyanka Chopra with Nick Jonas and Deepika Padukone among others turn up in exotic creations that defied the imagination. While Lady Gaga dressed in multiple outfits which she revealed by disrobing till her underwear on the pink carpet, Katy Perry came dressed as a chandelier. Priyanka Chopra’s look from Dior which immediately made it to ‘Vanity Fair’s list of best dressed couples (along with Nick Jonas) was described as “incredible” by ‘Time’ magazine: “With stunning hair, silver-frosted brows and lashes and raspberry eyeshadow and lips, her beauty look was bold enough. But it was the fashion that finished the serve, featuring a feathery silver-and-pastel gown and flowing cape — all topped off with a silver cage crown. Even her hosiery was matching, polka-dotted with silver. The overall effect was of an otherworldly fairy godmother figure, or maybe a cousin of Glinda the Good Witch,” wrote the magazine. Nick Jonas wore a white suit with a pencil-thin moustache along with glittery shoes for the camp effect. Deepika Padukone was dressed as a Disney princess in a Zac Posen metallic pink gown with a pink headband and puffed up hair. She accentuated her look with dangling earrings and a silver bracelet. The Met Gala event is considered the Oscars of the fashion world and takes place on the first Monday of May every year, which this year fell on 6 May. Outlandish but fun!
