Indra Nooyi's emotional farewell to PepsiCo

Friday, October 05, 2018

Indian-origin American corporate czarina Indra Nooyi stepped down as CEO of PepsiCo last Tuesday. Indra spent 12 years at the helm of PepsiCo and 24 years with the company in total, since she joined in 1994. During her tenure PepsiCo revenues have jumped upwards by almost 80 percent. At the turn of the millennium, she was one of the pioneering women to break past the proverbial glass ceiling that restrains women from positions of power. While she will remain chairperson of the company until early 2019, Indra penned a goodbye letter of sorts for the New York-headquartered company’s employees that asked them to “think hard about time”. In the letter, Indra said she wished she had had more time to spend with her family: “I've been blessed with an amazing career, but if I'm being honest, there have been moments I wish I'd spent more time with my children and family.” In 2016, while on a global panel for women, Indra recalled that when her daughter was just 4 or 5 years old she wrote her mother a letter. The letter said, "Dear mom, Please, please, please, please, please come home. I love you, but I'd love you more if you came home." As Indra continues in her letter to PepsiCo’s employees: “We have so little of (time) on this earth. Make the most of your days, and make the space for the loved ones who matter most…so I encourage you: be mindful of your choices on the road ahead.” And towards the end of the letter, Indra quotes the poet Rumi, saying: “Thinking of my life beyond PepsiCo I am reminded of the words of the great Sufi mystic Rumi. ‘Goodbyes are only for those who love with their eyes. Because for those who love with heart and soul, there is no such thing as separation.’ To all my colleagues, friends and family, thank you for making the last 24 years special beyond words. Though I will no longer be in the office every day, I take comfort knowing that we will never be truly apart, because I have loved this company, and each of you, with all my heart and soul. And I always will.”
