Aamir Khan’s ‘shramdaan’ or voluntary labour for the drought affected villages of Maharashtra on Maharashtra Day (May 1) took place yesterday with actor Alia Bhatt joining the movement with Aamir in Latur. Others in the celebrity brigade who participated included Marathi actors like Sai Tamhankar, Anita Date, Girish Kulkarni and Amey Wagh. The temperatures in Latur soared in the afternoon to 41 degrees centigrade but that didn’t stop the work from continuing. Said Aamir to the media about the nitty gritties of the campaign: “When people sign up, they are assigned the taluka (administrative division) closest to them. When they reach the village, there will be a registration desk where they will be given a spot. For instance, if they are told to go to position 5A, there will be a rectangular drawing at that spot where they will dig.” Meanwhile, the organisers of the shramdaan campaign which started in 2016 said that, this year there were more than one lakh people from the cities and three to four lakh people from the villages participating in the campaign, to build reservoirs for water storage. Even as the actor celebrated, on April 29, 30 years of the release of his debut blockbuster film with Juhi Chawla, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (QSQT), it’s remarkable how this superstar manages to remain so down-to-earth and rooted in his approach to life.
