A Surat based man's desire to turn his overweight wife into a slim, trim woman forced him to cheat people who sought to sell their kidneys at a high price. After the racket came to light, the couple was arrested by Malad police.

The arrested accused Vijay Dodhriya and his wife Riya Dodhriya were picked up by the police after their roles were established in the crime.

Talking about their modus operandi how to cheat people, Malad Police revealed that, both the arrested accused through a Facebook page used to invite people for organ donations whichpromised lucrative returns.

They even used to take a lot of money from those who approached them in the name of registrations. Once the donors transferred the money to their accounts, they would switch off their phones. The police have found a couple of numbers and details of other victims from the page.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP-Zone XII) Vikram Deshmane said, ''Both the accused were nabbed from Bhavnagar in Gujrat, and in an initial investigation it has come out that they had cheated more than 70-80 people.''

Going through their Call Detail Record (CDR), the Malad cops learnt that till now they had cheated more than 70 to 80 people and collected lakhs  from them on the pretext of helping them to sell  their organs. They charged Rs 10,000 as an initial fee but then went on to take more amounts taking into consideration the status of the donors, thus making it a rather grim racket.

According to Malad police, the matter came to light in March last year when a woman approached Dr Rajesh Vasudev Kumar of Malad-based Apex Kidney Care Hospital and offered to sell her kidney for Rs 55 lakh. The woman, Deeplai Waze (24), who hails from Pune, told the doctor that she had already paid Rs10,000 to a Gujarat-based facilitator, who had promised to help her sell the organ.

Concerned that someone was trying to tarnish the reputation of his clinic, Dr Kumar approached the Malad police station last week and filed a complaint in the matter. A FIR under sections 420 (cheating) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC was registered. The woman was summoned for questioning.

Dr. Kumar told  the police that in the past one year, many people approached him saying that they had registered their names online for kidney donations and had also deposited money as registration fees.

About 15 people from Karnataka, Gujarat and other states contacted him during this time. They were told that the clinic would give them hefty sums for each kidney. When more and more people started approaching him, he registered a complaint with the police.

Interrogation revealed that arrested accused Vijay and his wife would identify such kidney transplant clinics and give attractive advertisements on social media platforms for kidney transplants. They would then fool people asking to register themselves with Rs. 10,000. They would take this money through online transactions. Police brought the accused to the Borivali court and they are remanded to Police custody till January 20. It is suspected that more people have been duped by the accused and more arrests are likely in the case, police added.
