Family feels there are many unanswered questions about death of Goa resident at airport

Manuel Pereira (33) was en route to his hometown in Madgaon, Goa, to celebrate his birthday on January 18. His family and friends had planned a grand surprise party, but he shocked them all with his mysterious death.

Manuel worked at an Indian hotel in Dubai, and was a transit passenger. He was flying from Dubai to Goa on Air India and was at the Mumbai domestic airport to take a connecting flight to Goa. There were reports that his visa had been cancelled in Dubai, so the police are not ruling out the suicide angle.

Yesterday, his brother, Joaquim Pereira, (30) waited outside the R.N.Cooper Municipal General Hospital for the autopsy formalities to be completed so that he could take the body for the funeral in Goa. “My brother was coming home to celebrate his birthday on January 18. On Sunday morning, at around 7 am, we were surprised to receive a phone call from Air India about his luggage lying with them. Later, we were informed about his death by the local police.”

“I am surprised and shocked as the Sahar Police are claiming that Manuel committed suicide outside the airport. We feel that he was murdered as there was no reason for his suicide and also, if he came out from the Airport premises, there should have been a pass given to him to come out. It was not found on him. It is very surprising that, despite tight security at the airport, a passenger actually could move out of the terminal without intimating anyone. There is a large presence of security men and CCTV cameras. That a man could actually get hanged or commit suicide inside a protected area is shocking,” he added.

Flaviano Pereira, a cousin, said, “The police are not ready to examine or accept even one per cent chance about a murder. Manuel was a very jolly person. Why would he commit suicide? We are just waiting for body to be handed over to us.”

However, when the ADC contacted Senior Police Inspector, Jaiprakash Giram from Sahar Police station said, “I think it is suicide. We are probing the case.”
DCP Satyanarayan Chaudhari of Zone 8, said, “I have no idea on this, contact the local police station.”
