Dozen police officials on the receiving end of attacks in last 20 days in West-North suburbs, accused arrested
Patrolling, nakabandi and documents checks of motorist are meant to safeguard public whilst maintaining law and order situations in the city, but lately these preventive measures have proved a painful experience for the Mumbai police especially in the West and North suburbs of the city, which has seen a significant rise in public abuse and assault cases which have been registered within a period of 20 days.
According to the police sources, if we dwell on the statistics of last 20 days, it shows that more than dozen of police officials have been attacked by public. Last month at MHB police station two accused were arrested by the police.
Police constable Amar Kamble, 34 was on duty, doing night patrolling and witnessed two people fighting on the road near St Lawrence school. Kamble intervened and separated the duo, and accordingly asked them to leave the place but they did not listen and in turn assaulted him. Kamble called the police and later both the accused were booked and arrested under sections 332, 353, 323, 504, 506, 34 of IPC.
A police sub inspector attached to Samtanagar police station was assaulted by a group of people at Lokhandwala area under the jurisdiction of Samtanagar police on 30th July night. PSI Naushad Pathan while on night patrolling saw several people sitting drinking alcohol, on the road. All were hollering under the influence of alcohol while Pathan asked them to leave the place, they started abusing him, not just abuse, they also assaulted him and damaged his bike too. Pathan called additional forces and managed to catch two accused, even as the others escaped from the spot. In the process, Pathan sustained injury on his finger. The arrested accused were produced before the court and remanded to judicial custody, their advocate applied for bail but court put forth a demand of rupees one lakh each for their bail. They did not make bail arrangement and the two accused are now in jail.
Last month an incident was reported and registered at the Vanrai police station where an unknown car driver hurt and fled after hurting a police constable during nakabandi on Western Express highway, the Vanrai police registered the case and are searching for the accused.
Two more incidents of assaults and abuse of police were reported at the Kherwadi and Kasturba Marg police station on 27th July night, and five people were booked and arrested by the police. In Kherwadi a police team was checking motor vehicles during nakabandi, they stopped one auto and was checking driver badge and license and uniform. The passenger sitting in the auto came out and started abusing the duty officer and later assaulted him. Police booked the accused under section 332 and 353 of IPC.
Kasturba Marg police booked and arrested four accused the same night for abusing and assaulting an on duty police officer. The police wireless mobile van of Kasturba Marg police went to enquire about loud music late at night at Datta Pada area. A birthday party was being celebrated there and many people were drinking and dancing to the loud and raucous music. Police officials tried to stop the music, but the peope who were celebrating got angry and stated abusing them, the police officials booked and arrested four of them and seized the DJ system and hauled the offenders to the police station along with the equipment.
