The third list was released yesterday; most colleges are set to begin by end of next week

The third and final general merit list for city colleges was released yesterday evening. While most of the seats in the top colleges were already filled in the first and second list, the number of colleges displaying the third merit list was still higher than last year. Bachelor of Science (BSc), which has been declining as a popular option among students, sawa dip in all colleges, compared to other courses.

Speaking about this, Ashok Wadia, principal of Jai Hind College, said, “Bachelor of Science has stopped being a popular option among students. The increasingly wide range of engineering and medical courses available for students to take directly after 12th, is part of the reason as well. Students nowadays only opt for pure sciences if they are confident of what they want to do in the future, after the degree. The dip is recent, it wasn’t this prominent until a few years ago. It is not just limited to India, but is being witnessed all over the world.”

Michelle Phillips, principal ofWilson College, said, “A lot of students who take admission in BSc, leave the course when the results of the various entrance exams  they have applied to are released. This is why our cut-off is low, as we are aware of what happens around September, and we wouldn’t want students with lower percentages to miss out on the seats. The demand for Science as a pure course has gone down, as students prefer to opt for professional courses.”

The degree college admissions, which were on hold until last week due to a Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed by state government in the Supreme Court, resumed as soon as the SLP was heard and dismissed by the SC on Friday. This is the last leg of the admission procedure, and students are expected to secure their seats in the respective colleges within the next two days. Orientation for most colleges will take place sometime next week, with lectures to commence soon after.
