Dangerous Kalyan road potholes claim 5 lives

A 26-year-old man died after being hit by by a truck after he fell off his motorbike after hitting a pothole on Gandhare bridge in Kalyan on Friday.

This is the fifth such incident in Kalyan since the monsoon. Due to the heavy downpour, the city roads are infested with potholes.

The deceased has been identified as Kalpesh Jadhav, a resident of Nandkar village in Bhiwandi, who runs a construction material business. Incidentally, he got married a month ago and after going to Kalyan for some work was returning back home.

According to Khadakpada police officials, "He was riding on his scooty when he struck a pothole and fell down while a speeding truck going towards  Bhiwandi crushed him. He died on the spot. The truck driver fled immediately after the incident".

A case was registered against the unidentified truck driver under the various section of Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicle Act.

According to sources, from Adharwadi jail area towards the Kalyan-Nashik Highway there are many potholes after five days of heavy downpour in the city. Police officials said they are going through CCTV footage of nearby area to catch the truck driver.

Five deaths have taken place in Kalyan due to the negligence of civic body. An eight-year-old boy died after he came under the wheels of a truck when his father’s motorcycle skidded between Shivaji Chowk and Sahajanand Chowk in Kalyan on June 2.

A 45-year-old man died after being hit by truck at Dwarli Naka in Haji Malang road on Wednesday this week after he fell in a pothole.

There was another incident of a 40-year-old woman who died after coming under the wheels of a bus at the busy Shivaji Chowk in Kalyan (West) on Sunday last week.

An over loaded truck with fodder toppled on the Kalyan-Bhiwandi road in which one passenger died and four others were injured

After the incident came to light the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation Commissioner Govind Bodke and other officials of the civic body visited the spot.
