Akshay Narvekar, Founder, Bombay Shirt Company

Akshay Narvekar is the founder of Bombay Shirt Company (BSC), India’s first online custom made shirts brand. Launched in 2012, the business has now expanded to include numerous brick and mortar stores across Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai, and the company is all set to launch its first international store in Dubai with another upcoming store in Kolkata.

Akshay feels very strongly that one’s fashion choices should express one’s personality and everybody should be able to channel their personal aesthetics into what they wear. He strives to create the perfect omni-channel experience for his customers, and his decisions are driven with the goal of making BSC a global brand.

In conversation with Dominic Rebello, Akshay says, it is his personal mission to ensure that BSC provides the highest quality product and aesthetic within their price ranges.

What is the idea behind Bombay Shirt Company?
Ever since I can remember, I’ve always been wearing custom-tailored shirts. I’d go out into the market to buy fabric, buy trims and accessories and ultimately take it to my local tailor to get it stiched. After a while, the process become cumbersome. I searched online for a e-commerce options, surprisingly none were available. Hence, the personal need for a one-stop shop to customise my shirts drove me to build the brand, Bombay Shirt Company.

We were the first to launch online in India. Using my years of experience working with fashion brands in Los Angeles, launched Bombay Shirt Company, purely as an online platform. Over the years, we’ve expanded to an omni-channel platform with  (2 stores in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai & now Kolkata). Recently we have made our first International foray, marking presence in Dubai at The Central Park Towers, DIFC which will be followed by New York by end of November, 2017. We make shirts with modern fabrics and aesthetics but with traditional tailoring techniques. The brand’s mission is to reinforce that world class product & services can originate in India.

How are you different from others?
We lay great focus on the provenance of our products and obsess over every detail that goes into making a great shirt. We showcase the finest fabrics ranging from Egyptian cottons, linens, denims, flannels and much more that are sourced from some of the biggest mills in Europe, India, Turkey and Japan. We render  a range of around 3000 fabrics in our stores which keep on changing every month. We also provide styling guidance through highly trained Stylists. Our algorithms and extensive data on patterns and fits, combined with the experience of our Master Tailors, means we have gotten close to perfecting the art of the fit.

Your vision for the company?
With a motive to stick to the benchmarks, we focus on offering affordable price points, giving customers a perfect fit and comfortable fabrics for every season.

What are your plans for the road ahead?
We are focusing our expansion on the international market. We have recently opened a store in Dubai at The Central Park Towers, DIFC which will be followed by a store in Soho, New York City by end of November, 2017. At the same time we are simultaneously expanding our offline presence in the Indian market as well. We have recently have opened our stores in Kolkata and Chennai and soon we are planning to tap other tier 1 & tier 2 cities like Hyderabad, Pune, Jaipur, Chandigarh and the likes.

Where do you see yourself five years down the road?
We hope to be a household name and the go-to brand for shirts in the geographies that we are present in.
