I have never written about artist Gaitonde. I first saw him at Bhulabhai Institute where Madhuri Desai and Soli Batlivala were providing facilities for artists to paint. What the artist got was small cubicles to do their work. I do not remember whether Gaitonde had a cubicle (studio).
I remember a concert by Ravi Shankar at the institute. The gathering was small. Ravi Shankar was broke. He must have been desperate. The truth is Ravi Shankar was fully recognised only when he went abroad and teamed up with the Beatles.
Top musicians and artists go through hell at some stages of their life.
I do not think Gaitonde was selling well. I used to wonder then whether he wanted ever to earn some money.
And only the other day I read in a paper that in an auction, there was an offer of Rs. 10 crore to a Gaitonde painting.
Very little is known about Gaitonde or his paintings. Either he was media shy or he did not know the importance of promoting his work.
