A combination of expressionism and realism can produce good, visually pleasing results. That’s what artist K. Subhash has done in his paintings. There are bright colours in most of the paintings – green, brown and blue. A religious person, he constructs faces of various Gods and mythological figures. They emerge from a complicated setting which is crowded with multiple forms. The faces are clearly painted out but on them there are dozens of points and forms in colour.
There are episodes (from our epics?) that are simply narrated. In one of the works, a warrior is trying to get a stuck wheel moving as an elephant is seen behind him. We see only the eye of the elephant and a part of the trunk. This piece is done in muted brown. In all the paintings, just one colour dominates, with support from small forms filled with colours.
The artist says that keen observation, a rational outlook and an open mind help him in his creative effort. He has tried out various techniques and keeps experimenting. He feels that all faiths have merit and in his paintings we see a spiritual quality. He thinks Jesus, Buddha, Krishna and others represent the spirit of humanity. It is this concept which he has used in the current exhibition of Nehru Centre. The exhibition which opens today will go on till August 28.
