Somnath’s sculpture: A mix of the tradition and modern
Wednesday, August 10, 2011

Sculptor Somnath Chakraborty observed the great and grand Indian traditional art and was fascinated by it. He however did not stop there but evolved a new style of his own. It is a sort of a mix between the traditional and modern. Result: Excellent art.
Somnath Chakraborty: “The vastness and grandeur of Indian art and sculpture and its rhythm has created ripples in my mind. My sculpture and paintings centre round the physical and mental faculties of human beings.”
The artist’s effort is to make the sculpture monumental and rhythmical: “My prime idea is to make my creations traditional and also universal.”
Somnath appears to be prolific and versatile sculptor. His prices at the Jehangir Art Gallery are just great. The sculpture “Ganapati Bappa” in bronze is an unique conception. The Ganesh Chaturti is near and Mumbai sculptors can derive inspiration from it. He sculpts ordinary happenings and brings out the extraordinary in them. The hand of a skilled, talented, experienced artist is behind each of the bronze pieces.
The exhibition which began on Monday will go on till Sunday.
