At The Art Loft, Francis H D’Sa discovers a different kind of Utopia in Shoeb Mashadi’s black and white prints that have layers of grey between the intercutting prints
Supermodel Tamara Moss is the protagonist in this monochromatic ‘noir’ journey that captures human emotions like despair, frustration, depression, loneliness, longing, and secret yearnings and desires too!
Shoeb Mashadi is a hotel management graduate and photography ‘just happened’….
He says, “My photographs are a candid, non linear narrative, a journal of everyday chaos and mundane chores – but lift the veil, dig deeper and the protagonist lets you into her inner world, where you can glimpse fragments of what lies inside each of us – the millions of questions about the uncertainty of life, a longing to break free and wander onto a road that draws us. To escape the neurosis of the mind and find comfort and security in dreams, dreaming on and on and never coming back – to escape from unrequited love. A realm of memories and a scar for life. This journal is a chronicle of the emotions, feelings and thoughts that are a part of every individual’s personal experiences.”
This is a storyboard of 98 prints often intercutting, one into the other as if in continuation of a story, light just intruding, like a Peeping Tom into the darkness of the room and all the controlled chaos of the mind, fighting to define the dark silhouettes, Mashadi doesn’t even miss the gentle sway of the curtain, and you can even smell the sweaty atmosphere, such is the power of his story telling photographs.
Mashadi uses a DSLR Canon 500D and his role models are Prabhuda Das Gupta and Bharat Sikka.
‘Finding Utopia’ is Shoeb Mashadi’s debut.
Last year, Shoeb Mashadi represented the country as one amongst ten photographers in the world who were selected to be a part of the TEDx photo chain, a part of the TEDx annual event held in Amsterdam, where his work was exhibited.
He was also selected as one of the faces to endorse the Swiss luxury brand of Gc Watches in India based on his work in photography. An image from ‘Finding Utopia’ was shortlisted for the prestigious HIPA award and another one was displayed at TEDx last year.
