The first thing that strikes one in the works of Jyoti Hattarki and Shantakumar Hattarki is bright images. Jyoti colours the faces of women – bright green or blue – and the men in contrasting colours. The nose is long and sharp and the costumes all in bright colours. The men wear many-coloured headwear. The women have glory, well-endorsed bodies.
Jyoti: “I have tried to bring in the challenge in formal construction and in themes – highlighting my ongoing struggle with inhibitions, contradictions. For me, painting is an expressions of my observation and dialogue with my inner self.”
Shantkumar Hattarki paints musicians. My effort is to define ‘opposition’ and control the tensions in the painting through space, matrices, images and colours. The exhibition is at Jehangir Art Gallery till October 9. Contact: 9320727758.
