Rajesh Sawant goes straight to the point. In an exhibition entitled “Journey”, he points horses with carriages. What makes the paintings attractive and interesting is the colours he paints the horses with. In one painting, the horse and the carriage is in scarlet. It looks good. There is elegance there – in all the images which he fills with bright colours. Maybe he wants to show life in bright colours. In the paintings, one sees the shadows of the horse and the carriage and the wheel. This provides a suitable contrast. And there are paintings of white, sturdy horses – ready to go.
The horse, carriage and the shadow in the paintings are used as symbols to convey life’s positive purpose. However one does not have to bother about meanings and messages. The visual impact is great – and that is more than half the battle.
The exhibition is at Hirji Art Gallery, Kala Ghoda. Contact: 9766311965.
