Shashikant Dhotre is perhaps the only painter who uses black paper and colour pencils. His creation is along traditional lines. It is clear his language is based on realism but he has achieved considerable control. Most of his life, he spends in villages. He belongs to the Vadar community which breaks huge stones – to earn a living. These stones have to be broken and shaped in a certain way – they have a certain structure which can be seen in his paintings. The artist’s raw energy and intensity can be seen in the shadows of his paintings. “Chandraparag” – the current exhibition is at the Jehangir Art Gallery till Sunday. Shashikant appears to be a good portrait artist. Most of the exhibits appear to have woman as the theme – women in different moods or at gentle work – beautiful women in the village.
