Manohar Gangan has produced some harshly realistic pictures of the Naxalite areas in Gadchiroli. Gangan is a Mumbai-based fine art photographer whose figurative works reveal simple but harsh life of tribal folks. They are beautiful people struggling for existence – often getting only lip sympathy. The figurative pictures he has done tell it all. Gangan looks at the tribal way of life in a realistic manner. We see the agony and ecstasy of those folks.
And we see – silence.
“…my works prove to be good examples for highlighting special features of tribal culture and struggle – as well as their revolutionary literature. I was motivated to present this and harsh problems faced by trials.”
We see an old, lonely, thin, woman walking away towards nowhere in a huge empty world. A sturdy dusky woman with a long pick-axe seems to be watching and waiting. A small girl with a thin line parting her hair is looking pretty and lost with her fingers on her lips. And in another picture – all red and beautiful – a woman is seated while her baby(?) is in a hanging cloth cradle. As a fine art photographer, Manohar Gangan excels.
The exhibition is at Jehangir Art Gallery – till Sunday. Contact: 9820301243.
