Skulduggery Pleasant – The Faceless Ones, the third book by Derek Landy, picks up from where Playing with Fire leaves off. Skulduggery and Valkyrie (now 14-years-old), have uncovered a plot to allow the Faceless Ones through a portal into our world. This will bring about the destruction of life as we know it. Banished from the department and branded a dangerous character, Skulduggery is kept off the case, but he is able to uncover enough information to put the pieces together.
After the duo inspect the crime scene of a teleporter's murder, four more teleporters show up dead, murdered in the same gruesome way. Someone named Batu is behind the killings, to whittle down the population to one...and that one teleporter will be used to open the gateway to the world for the Faceless Ones.
Batu also has set up The Diablerie, a bunch of assassins hell-bent on making sure that the gateway is opened. To make matters worse, there is also a spy passing out information.
