Varun Dhawan, the ‘Dilwale’ star hits galore like ‘Badlapur, ‘ABCD-2’, ‘Main Tera Hero’ and other prime time movies had a brief chat with us on general topics..
How was it like to work with SRK, Kajol and Rohit Shetty?
The flow of the film is not the usual one. There is a lot of back and forth with flashbacks. Sometimes in our lives, it happens that you think you know someone in the present but you are not really aware of what hides in their past. In this film also, SRK and Kajol have a past which we don’t know of. We think they are as they appear to us. The shadow of their past hovers our love story and that’s how the story proceeds. But the narrative is laid out in the typical Rohit Shetty style.
You are sharing screen space with legends like SRK and Kajol. Were there any insecurities?
Not at all. If I am in a film which has SRK, Kajol, Boman Irani, Johnny Lever and Sanjay Sir, that gives a lot of confidence and no cause for worry. I was the first one to be offered Dilwale. Rohit Sir was yet to meet SRK then. What I did in the movie was much more than what was narrated. I enjoyed doing a comedy film after Main Tera Hero and more interesting, with veterans like Johnny Lever and Sanjay Mishra.
You look great with your on-screen actresses including Kriti Sanon. What is the secret?
There is no secret to it. I am happy that my bonding with actresses come across well. As for Kriti, you don’t feel that it’s just her second film. I was much more nervous during my second one. She is unfazed, completely unnerved by the starry presence around. She is a Delhi girl, typically like that. No nonsense person. She is much focused.
Speaking of humility, SRK is a very humble man. Do you intend to be like him?
Shah Rukh Sir is much more modest and humble than I am. At the position that he is, still being so grounded is truly admirable. How he deals with the media is a lesson. But I think I can’t be like him. There can only be one Shah Rukh Khan. I would rather be a better version of myself.
There’s another Varun in the film. How did you two gel?
We had great fun shooting for Varun Sharma is a friend now. We are childhood buddies and we have a really interesting track in the film. In real life also, both of us are Punjabis so there was an instant connect. I really want the audience to enjoy our interactions.
What’s your take on the competition around?
Well, it’s evidently there and I am happy about it. There is so much of talent around and it drives you to perform better every time. I wish there comes as many good writers and technicians. And more work crops up in the industry. I truly get inspired from other actors’ works but that’s about it. I have a very healthy approach to it. We all are doing different work and that’s what matters. Like no one else is doing comedy now which I love doing.
What's next on the anvil?
I have my brother Rohit Dhawan’s action thriller ‘Dhishoom’ with John Abraham and one film with my father Daviod Dhawan which will be announced soon.
