This and that for the New Year

Friday, January 06, 2017
By Deepa Gahlot

There’s a superstitious belief that any film releasing in the first weekend of January does not do well, so by and large no major film releases then. Before the line-up for the New Year starts, there is a lull, and time for another installment of this and that

  • Media reports saying Dangal beats Sultan at the box-office is so silly—just because they are both about wrestling, they are not competing in the ring!

  • It’s good to hear Deepika Padukone speak in her normal Bangalore accent in her Hollywood film xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage.

  • Priyanka Chopra’s role in the Baywatch movie had better be substantial—or it will be such an anti-climax.

  • Vin Diesel’s impending visit to India to promote his film is being reported with the breathless awe usually reserved for royalty.

  • Rakesh Roshan admitting that he is superstitious about the release date of his film is so unlike industry folk who wear all kinds of talismans and observe bizarre rituals but pretend it’s just to please their parents.

  • Practically every gangster in Western and Southern India is having a movie made on their lives; real-life heroes rarely get this much importance!

  • It’s sad that A-list actors are playing these lowlifes and giving them respectability.

  • When will Kangana Ranaut run out of scandalous things to reveal about herself—it may be too soon, but this one deserves a biopic more than Sanjay Dutt.

  • Akshay Kumar’s career is a good example of how unpredictable a star’s career can be—who would have imagined he would be competing for best actor trophies!

  • Bollywood has a tradition of musicals, but a La La Land seems so out of its range of limited talent.

  • This year will probably see the maximum number of star kids making their movie debuts—it is a bit unfair how heredity trumps talent so easily, but then only the best and the toughest survive.

  • Why do stars bother to hide their relationships, when all they manage to do is increase media and public scrutiny into their personal lives?

  • On the other hand, why do they flaunt their togetherness and then demand privacy?

  • Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli’s parents must not be so eager to get them married as the media is!

  • Finally—Salman Khan should just get married, so that the media interviewing him has nothing to ask!
